The Criminal Investigations Division can be subdivided into three sub-units, Detective Bureau, Special Investigations Unit, and the Criminalistics Unit.

  1. Criminal Investigations Unit: The Criminal Investigations Unit is comprised of a sergeant, four detectives, and an investigative aide who are responsible for investigating crimes such as homicides, burglaries, assaults, and other major offenses. Detectives in this unit work closely with victims, witnesses, and other law enforcement agencies to solve cases and ensure justice is served. This unit also maintains a Digital Forensics Laboratory where examiners conduct forensic analysis on digital devices.

  2. Special Investigations Unit: This unit is comprised of a sergeant and detectives who handle cases requiring advanced investigative techniques, including narcotics enforcement, organized crime, human trafficking, and other covert operations. The SIU is tasked with gathering intelligence, conducting surveillance, and managing high-priority cases.

  3. Criminalistics Unit: The Criminalistics Unit is responsible for the care, custody, and control of all property and evidence collected by the Venice Police Department. The Criminalistics Unit also provides the Crime Scene Investigative function for the VPD.

The Criminal Investigations Division also conducts all background investigations for prospective Venice Police Officer candidates.
