Utilities sewer cleaning program continues in June

Post Date:05/18/2026 3:01 PM

The City of Venice Utilities Department is continuing its proactive sewer cleaning program, aimed at maintaining the integrity of the wastewater collection system, preventing overflows, and ensuring the health and safety of all its residents. Starting in June 2026, Utilities will be working with contractor U.I.T. LLC  to clean and closed-circuit televise (CCTV) 20 miles of the gravity sewer system. This cleaning and CCTV will take place in various locations on the island in the City of Venice. All customers will receive a door hanger at least 48 hours prior to cleaning.

This critical infrastructure maintenance will involve high-pressure water jetting, mechanical root cutting, and CCTV inspections. This work is essential to remove accumulated debris, grease, roots, and other blockages that can lead to significant issues, including:

  • Preventing Costly Backups and Overflows
    • Blocked sewers can cause sewage to back up into homes and businesses, leading to extensive property damage and costly repairs.
  • Improving Public Health
    • Regular cleaning mitigates the risk of exposure to raw sewage, which can carry harmful bacteria and pathogens.
  • Extending Infrastructure Lifespan
    • By removing corrosive materials and preventing blockages, the cleaning program helps prolong the life of the existing sewer pipes, reducing the need for expensive future replacements.
  • Eliminating Foul Odors
    • Buildup in sewer lines can lead to unpleasant smells emanating from drains, which will be significantly reduced through this cleaning.
  • Ensuring Efficient Wastewater Flow
    • A clear sewer system ensures that wastewater is transported efficiently to treatment facilities.
