General Statement of Job

Performs operations and maintenance at a City of Venice Water Facility in compliance with Federal, State and City (local) mandates. 

 City Expectations:

 In addition, certain essential city services are required to be maintained in any civil emergency. Depending upon the type of emergency, any and all employees may be activated as essential employees in the event of an emergency.

 Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  1. Operates and monitors pumps, valves, motors, gauges, meters, and other equipment used at assigned facility.
  2.  Performs applicable chemical and physical tests of water at regular intervals for quality checks and to meet regulatory standards and requirements.
  3.  Maintains accurate, legible and comprehensive records of all operations and tests.

  4.  Adds chemicals according to prescribed standards.

  5.  Maintains inventory of chemicals and supplies.

  6.  Understands and adheres to all applicable regulatory permit and compliance requirements.

  7.  Responsible for staying current with technological changes pertaining to plant operations.

  8.  Performs services and preventive maintenance on a variety of plant equipment and machinery; cleans and paints equipment; assists mechanics in major repairs and installation work; performs general building maintenance and custodial work at plant.

  9. Notifies supervisor of equipment malfunctions, problems or unusual situations; and implements appropriate emergency procedures.


Responsible for personal safety and proper use/care/maintenance of tools/equipment used.  Responsible in work to designated supervisor.

Minimum Education and Training

 High school graduate or equivalent.

 Class C (Grade 127)

For Water Production Division must possess and maintain a State of Florida Class C Drinking Water Treatment Plant Operator License.

 Class B (Grade 129)

 For Water Production Division must possess and maintain a State of Florida Class B Drinking Water Treatment Plant Operator License.

 Class A (Grade 132)

 For Water Production Division must possess and maintain a State of Florida Class A Drinking Water Treatment Plant Operator License.


Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required

Skill Requirements:

Knowledge of the techniques, principles, and equipment used in plant operations.  Ability to work independently of direct supervision and capable of sustaining regular and predictable attendance.  Ability to read, interpret and/or record test data, gauges and meters used in regulating the operation of the plant. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates, fellow employees, and the general public.  Possess a valid Florida Driver’s license (or valid out-of-state driver’s license), free of any serious violations. Out-of-state applicants have 30 days from start of employment to attain a valid Florida Driver’s License.


Must have a basic understanding of the current version of the Microsoft Windows operating system.  Familiarity with Superion Software applications based on an iSeries system is preferred.  Working knowledge of the current versions of Microsoft Outlook and Internet Explorer is also highly recommended.  Ability to learn specific computer applications used in the Department.

 Physical Requirements:

Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, bend, stoop, reach, and lift up to 40 pounds.  Ability to work outside in all kinds of weather.   Must have good eyesight and hearing with or without aids.  Reasonable accommodation will be considered for individuals with physical disabilities.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed either indoors or outdoors in all kinds of weather.  Required to work a shift of either eight or ten hours.  May be requested to work overtime or additional shifts as needed.
