City of Venice
City on the Gulf
Committed to being Environmentally Conscious

The City of Venice has been reducing energy consumption for the past seven years. By partnering with FPL, which did a free study, the city replaced inefficient power consuming components with new systems that reduce the city’s carbon emissions. Some accomplishments are:
- Replacing pumps at the water plant with newer variable speed pumps.
- Replacing the air conditioning system at city hall with an ice chiller unit that runs during off-peak hours.
- Replacing fluorescent lighting with high efficiency lamps.
The Information Systems department replaced single station inkjet printers with Energy Star Xerox network printers that use ink blocks instead of ink cartridges. These are used as centralized printing stations instead of having a printer at every workstation. Most printers in use also have duplex capabilities (two-sided printing) for paper conservation.
In 2007, most of the workstations were replaced by laptops that have a 4.0 Energy Star rating. This eliminated the need for a UPS (un-interrupted power supply) backup power for the tower computers at every workstation.
Broken electronic equipment was recycled by M.A.R.S. in Tampa. Usable but outdated computer equipment was donated to a local nonprofit, Indigo Academy Inc., which refurbishes the equipment and provides it to school children who cannot afford to buy a computer.
These are some of the larger efficiencies implemented by the city in recent years. The city is committed to reducing energy consumption when replacing or initiating new facilities, equipment, or projects.
