Utilizing state-of-the-art reverse osmosis treatment, the city’s water plant can produce more than 4 million gallons per day. Water with high mineral content is pumped to the plant from 14 wells, about 350 feet deep, located in the Waterford and Sawgrass subdivisions, and along the Intracoastal Waterway. The water is purified as it flows through the reverse osmosis facility.
A degassifier removes hydrogen sulfide gas. The water is then disinfected with chlorine, and the pH is adjusted to 8.0. Finally zinc orthophosphate is added to the water to prevent harmful leaching of copper from pipes in homes, and corrosion of the pipes in the city’s distribution system.
The city employs state certified water treatment plant operators to oversee this process. They perform quality checks around the clock, 365 days a year. Highly skilled maintenance crews ensure the system is kept in top-notch condition.
