To protect the environment and ensure the safety of city residents, hazardous waste is banned from the landfill.
Residents may bring the following household hazardous waste items to the Sarasota County Transfer Station on Jackson Road. It is open Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (except New Year's Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas) from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Paint, oil, gasoline, anti-freeze, fluorescent bulbs, chemicals, pesticides, car batteries, fire extinguishers and propane tanks are among the commonly collected things at this site. (Propane tanks that have the valve removed will be collected with regular garbage.)
Call 861-1530 for additional information.
Motor oil and oil filters will be collected on regular garbage days. Oil must be in clear, plastic containers with a screw-on lid. Filters should be in a zip-lock bag. Place these items next to garbage for collection.
Electronic Waste:
The city provides curb-side collection of electronics for a fee, or residents can take electronics to the Sarasota County Transfer Station free of charge. Call 486-2422 for fees and scheduling.
Some examples of electronic waste are televisions, computers, monitors, keyboards, printers, scanners and fax machines.
VCR’s, radios, stereos, telephones and cameras may be placed in the regular garbage collection.
This service is not provided to commercial customers.
Commercial customers may call Sarasota County at 861-1530, or look on the Web site at http://www.scgov.net for information on electronic waste recycling.
