Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative |
On Saturday, April 30, 2011 the Venice Police Department will be participating in the second annual Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative. This is a one-day collaborative effort with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The hours will be from 10:00 a.m. through 2:00 p.m.. This initiative provides the public the opportunity to voluntarily surrender expired, unwanted, or unused prescription drugs and other medications to law enforcement officers for destruction.
Last year the nationwide effort collected over 121 tons of unused and unwanted drugs. Four and a half tons were taken from Florida residents. It is estimated that there are 6.2 million current non-medical users of these drugs. These expired, unwanted or unused drugs in our homes are a potential source for abuse and pose an unacceptable risk to the public’s health and safety.

City of Venice: A team of assessors from the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) will arrive Tuesday, August 25, 2009 to examine all aspects of the Venice Police Department’s policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services, Chief Julie Williams announced today. The Venice Police Department has to comply with approximately 259 standards in order to receive accredited status. Many of the 259 standards are critical to life, health and safety issues.
As part of the on-site assessment, agency members and the general public are invited to offer comments to the assessment team. Comments must be in writing and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CFA standards. A copy of the standards is available through the Venice Police Department’s Public Information Officer at 941-486-2444.

The Accreditation Manager for Venice Police Department is Lee Lyons. She said the assessment team is composed of law enforcement practitioners from similar agencies. The CFA Assessment Team Leader is Captain Dean Kelly, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Other team members are Lieutenant Daryl Daniels, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and Ms. Cheryl Turner, Altamonte Springs Police Department.
Once the Commission’s assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full Commission, which will then decide if the agency is to receive accredited status. The Venice Police Department’s accreditation is for 3 years.
