Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I determine where my property line is?

You may determine where your property line is by finding an existing property corner marker and measure from an existing survey, or you will need to hire a certified surveyor. (The city does not provide surveys or professional survey services).

2. The city owns an easement along my property. What is the purpose of an easement? Am I required to maintain it?

An easement is private property which the owner maintains but allows the city to access for maintenance of utilities or facilities.

3. There is a drainage pipe under my driveway that seems to be clogged. Who is responsible for maintaining it?

The homeowner is responsible for any maintenance on driveway culverts.

4. What is a right-of-way, and why do I need a permit to work in it?

A right-of-way is city or county owned public land. A permit is necessary to ensure that the work that you are doing meets certain standards. Please contact the engineering office if you are not sure if the right-of-way you are working in is city or county owned.

5. I would like to put in a swimming pool or build an addition.  Why am I required to obtain a site preparation permit or property addition form from the Engineering Department?

A site permit is required so that your disturbed site does not contribute run off into neighboring land or existing drainage systems. A property addition form is required to determine if a revised drainage plan is needed.

6. There is a drainage system in my neighborhood that doesn’t seem to be functioning properly.  Who should I call?

If the system is within a public right-of-way or on a city drainage easement, contact the city stormwater division. If the system is on private property, contact the property owners. To determine whether the system is public or private, please contact the stormwater division at aking@ci.venice.fl.us or by calling (941) 486-2626 ext. 25005.

7. My neighbor’s home was built higher than mine. I am afraid that a rain event may cause flooding in my own home.  Can anything be done?

There are solutions to stormwater problems caused by other properties. If you have a potential problem, please contact the stormwater division.

8. If I see someone dumping or placing something other than water in a storm drain or waterway, who do I contact?

Only non-chemical water may enter a storm drain or waterway. If you see anything else in a storm drain or water feature, please contact the Stormwater Division a aking@ci.venice.fl.us or call (941) 486-2626, ext. 25005.

9. May I fertilize my lawn or apply pesticides or herbicides freely?

These products should be applied sparingly in accordance with the city's fertilizer ordinance to prevent them from entering a storm drain and ultimately the Gulf of Mexico.
