The Building Department issues building permits, ensures contractors are licensed as required by Florida Statute 489, reviews all plans for code compliance and conducts inspections of all construction for compliance with the approved plans and the Florida Building Code as required by Florida Statute 553 and the city of Venice code of ordinances. The department also provides support for two boards appointed by the mayor and city council:

  • The Architectural Review Board (ARB), and the
  • The Construction Board of Adjustment and Appeals.

The ARB is responsible for review and approval of architectural elements within the city’s Venetian Theme and Historic districts. The Architectural Guidelines Handbook and Appendices provides information pertaining to the specific design standards required in these districts. Click here for Current schedule of ARB filing & meeting dates for 2008.

The Construction Board of Adjustment and Appeals reviews proceedings brought against contractors who purposely violate codes and laws. A contractor believed to be in violation may also be required to appear before the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulations.

Effective October 1, 2007, all permits issued for the roof replacement on a single-family residence constructed prior to the implementation of the Florida Building Code (March 1, 2002) shall comply with the requirements of the Hurricane Mitigation Retrofit Manual (HMRM).
