Moving the Lord-Higel House
The oldest existing house in the city of Venice was built in 1896 near Roberts Bay in a 93-acre citrus grove by Joseph H. Lord. Lord hired a member of another pioneer family, George Higel to manage his grove. Higel, his wife, Abigail, and their six children were the first to live in the house. In the 1950s, George Higel Jr. moved the house to 811 LaGuna Drive, where it was continuously occupied by several families until 2005. That year, Gary Pillitteri bought the property with the intention of demolishing the old house. When he discovered the historic significance of it, Pillitteri donated it to the city. In July 2005, the city moved the house from LaGuna Drive to 409 Granada Ave. Since then, the Friends of the Lord-Higel House was formed as a fundraising entity to restore the structure and turn it into a museum and learning center.
